![]() But the majority of the book’s content is extremely grim. Not tough to understand––on the contrary, Yang’s writing is clean and balanced, with an appropriate smattering of personal anecdotes that humanize and endear him to the reader. If you’re considering reading this book, be warned: it is tough. Yang’s excellent book, The War on Normal People, is the boldest and best argument for UBI to date. Yang’s central campaign issue is the institution of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) for all Americans, a daring and promising idea that has been on my radar for some years now. ![]() Yang, who is running for President in 2020, immediately struck me as honest, intelligent, well-informed, and profoundly reasonable––a heroic foil for the repugnant personalities that dominate today’s national politics. Like many others, I discovered Andrew Yang by way of his excellent interview with Sam Harris last month. ![]()

Bernie is alone in there now, submerged and hovering in the centre of the pond. A walkway around the top of the pond means that the rangers can deal with Bernie without having to actually touch him: dropping chickens into the water and knocking him out with a tranquilliser gun if they need to. Up on the dry bit, a little door connects to the outside, sun sliding in through the gaps. ![]() The glass shows a cross-section of pond and land. Kim pulls her mask off, and we grin at each other through the murk. Iridescent fish that shiver behind coral with sleek, silent bodies. The hungry creatures in the tanks list through the dark water. At the aquarium, the generator grinds away over the gurgle of pumps and swishes. We drive the baked roads with the windows up, battered by the smells and rumours and stories that rush in, even through our masks. She blinks over the picture of the emu, nods bravely. I bend my tea towel–wrapped face to take in hers. Me and Kim pop the feed buckets in the campervan and head toward the aquarium. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All she has to do is become an expert bounty hunter overnight-and keep herself from getting killed before she gets her man. I put "Beloved" by Toni Morrison on the back burner whilst reading this book, so it's interesting to see the two different approaches to writing about the same time from two different perspectives. Quilts slung over a fence or windowsill, seemingly to air, passed on the necessary information to slaves. Some of the most common patterns were Monkey Wrench, Star, Crossroads and Wagon Wheel. Each pattern represented a different meaning. The book does deal with escaped slaves on the road away from the southern states, but avoids the more brutal facts of the business, rather addressing it from a rather genteel 21st century viewpoint reading a 19th century gentle-woman's diary. The quilt patterns, used in a certain order, relayed messages to slaves preparing to escape. The Runaway Quilt takes us through Sylvia reading through this journal and finding out things about her family and the community she joined during a very difficult period in American history. ![]() It is written by Gerda, who came over from Germany with her brother to found the house and business that Sylvia and her siblings inherited. ![]() This book focuses on Sylvia, who finds a diary written just before the Civil War, along with several old and partially damaged quilts. ![]() ![]() In the original drafts of the book, we felt the narrative made it too obvious to outsiders that Raoden must have been thrown into Elantris. This was added as a tangent to one of Moshe’s suggestions–he wanted us to have an opportunity to see Sarene investigating Raoden’s death. The second big addition came in the form of the funeral tent scene. This counteracts a bit of the strength we see from her in the first scene at the docks, rounding her out as a character. ![]() ![]() This is the section were Sarene sits in the carriage, thinking about her anger at Raoden and her insecurity. The first edit to the chapter came with the addition of the Sarene-and-Ashe-travel-to-the-palace scene. It was always my intention to show a more sensitive side to her later in the novel, but I didn’t intend to lead with it quite as quickly as I ended up doing. They thought she came off as too brusque and manipulative. I had a lot of trouble in the original drafts of this book, since many alpha readers didn’t like her in this chapter. However, I’ve found that Sarene is many people’s least-favorite of the three characters. She gives Raoden the hint he needs to fix ELANTRIS, and she gives Hrathen the moment of courage he needs in order to turn against Dilaf. In the end, she’s the one that provides the solutions to both Raoden and Hrathen’s problems. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Recent clients have included the brands Hermès, Miu Miu, Maison Margiela, The Row and the art institutions Somerset House, Design Museum and Het Nieuwe Instituut.
